Attitudes about Periods

When Dr. Nancy and I give our Live Puberty Presentations, we see grimaces, smiles, and sometimes confusion on the faces of these smart, determined, capable girls as they process the physiology of a period for the first time. Many of the girls haven't started their period and the fear of the unknown is real. Blood can be scary or fascinating depending on the viewpoint of the girl.

Attitudes vary widely. Some girls are excited for the challenge of starting her period and curious as to what changes are ahead. Some are nervous, scared, timid, or angry at the inevitable. Others are just plain indifferent. And all of that is fine! Let her feel how she wants to about it. Let your preteen process at her own speed and come to you with questions. You are capable and well equipped as her most trusted advisor to guide her through.
